Session: Dealing With Chop Problems

Dave Detwiler began teaching in the Northern Virginia area in 1972 and has taught one of the most successful trumpet studios in Virginia for over 50 years. Dave has taught at several Fairfax County Public Schools as a full time band director (1997-2002) and trumpet section leader (early 1990’s to present) and was an assistant professor of music at Georgetown University where he taught jazz improv, trumpet and directed the Georgetown Jazz Ensemble (1982-1998)

In 1973 Dave joined The United States Army Band “Pershings Own” as a lead and jazz trumpeter with The US Army Blues and trumpet soloist with The US Army Concert Band, playing concerts and solos across the United States, and throughout the world from 1973 until his retirement from the Army in 2000. In a parallel career, Dave was the National Symphony Orchestra “Pops” lead and jazz solo trumpeter performing at The Kennedy Center, all televised special concerts and special occasions from 1988 until 2020. Dave’s 50 year career has seen him perform with just about every big name in show business from Sinatra and Streisand to Kendrick Lamar, Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys. He has been a guest artist with The New York Philharmonic, The Cincinnati Pops and The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, as well as being a member of The Wolftrap Orchestra. Dave’s solo performances and clinics are known world-wide and he has presented and performed over the years at many IAJE, NTC, and ITG events, teaching and sharing his trumpet knowledge.
