Session: Competitions: why you should enter them and how to get the most out of them

Hailed as ​​“remarkable” by the Daily Telegraph, British trumpeter Matilda Lloyd is a fast-rising young artist with exceptional poise and musicality. Aged 25, Matilda is captivating audiences with her artistry and communication, her flawless technique and the unique character she brings to each and every work.​​​ In 2017, Matilda won the Eric Aubier International Trumpet Competition in Rouen, France, an achievement which lead to her international debut in Spring 2019 with l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen. In the two seasons since, Matilda has made her debuts in the USA, South Africa, Germany, and Sweden performing with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic, Johannesburg Philharmonic, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern and Malmö Symphony Orchestra. Matilda has also performed many recitals around the UK, including at Wigmore Hall, St. John’s Smith Square, St. Martin-in-the-Fields and at the Lammermuir Festival.

In 2014, Matilda was the winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Brass Final, and in 2016, gave her BBC Proms solo debut, performing at London’s Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Philharmonic and Alpesh Chauhan. Recent highlights also include performances with the BBC Concert Orchestra (for BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night), the London Mozart Players and the Manchester Camerata. Matilda was recently featured as one of BBC Radio 3’s “31 Under 31: Young Stars” and has been featured on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune numerous times. 

The 20/21 season sees Matilda make her debut in the Netherlands with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and join the Camerata Nordica on a tour of the Kalmar Region in Sweden. Matilda will also collaborate once again with the Gesualdo Six and perform their programme ‘O Radiant Dawn’ in Sweden and the UK. Matilda will receive lessons during this season from Håkan Hardenberger at the Malmö Academy of Music.

Matilda released her debut album Direct Message on the Orchid Classics Label in October 2018, featuring 20th and 21st century works for trumpet and piano with pianist John Reid. The disc received a 4-star review in BBC Music Magazine.
