Hailed as ​​“remarkable” by the Telegraph, British trumpeter Matilda Lloyd is a fast-rising young artist with exceptional poise and musicality. Aged 27, Matilda is captivating audiences and critics alike with her artistry and communication, and her “flawless sound and virtuosic technique” (Saarbrücker Zeitung, March 2020) bring a unique flair to every performance.​​​

In the 22/23 season, Matilda will make her debut performances in Iceland and in Poland with the Pomeranian Philharmonic Bydgoszcz, alongside concerto appearances with the Bad Reichenhaller Philharmoniker, Bath Festival Orchestra, Oulu Sinfonia and a tour with the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen. Matilda will continue her close collaboration with the Britten Sinfonia for a series of performances in Spring 2023 to celebrate the launch of her debut disc for Chandos Records ‘Casta Diva’, which will culminate in a lunchtime recital at the Wigmore Hall, London. This season also sees performances in Sweden with the Gesualdo Six, recitals across the UK with Martin Cousin and in Northern Ireland with organist Richard Gowers.

Recent highlights have included tours with the Britten Sinfonia and Camerata Nordica, and concerto appearances with the Oulu Sinfonia, Rotterdam Sinfonia, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, KwaZulu-Natal Philharmomic and Johannesburg Philharmonic among others. Matilda also premiered John Woolrich’s Hark! the echoing air at Snape Maltings for ‘Summer at Snape’in June 2021, with Sian Edwards and the Britten Sinfonia and has recently performed at the Bath, Buxton, Lammermuir and Swaledale Festivals.

In 2014, Matilda was the winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Brass Final, and in 2016, made her BBC Proms solo debut in the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Philharmonic. The following year, Matilda won the Eric Aubier International Trumpet Competition in Rouen, France, which led to her international debut with l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen. Previous highlights also include concerto performances with the BBC Concert Orchestra, the London Mozart Players and the Manchester Camerata and recitals at prestigious venues including Wigmore Hall and St. Martin-in-the-Fields. 

Matilda’s debut album, Direct Message, was released on the Orchid Classics Label in October 2018, and received a 4-star review in BBC Music Magazine; “a dynamic showcase of established and newly composed trumpet repertoire. A very engaging listen”. She also recorded Arnold Griller’s Trumpet Concerto with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra for Toccata Classics in January 2021. Matilda was recently one of BBC Radio 3’s “31 Under 31: Young Stars” and has appeared on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune numerous times. Matilda’s performance of Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto in E with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern has been played on German Radio station SWR2 as their Musikstück der Woche [Performance of the Week] multiple times.

Matilda graduated with a First Class degree in Music from Cambridge University in 2017 and received a Master’s Degree (DipRAM) from the Royal Academy of Music in 2019. She also studied for 2 years with Håkan Hardenberger on the Artist Diploma course at the Malmö Academy of Music. Matilda is a Yamaha Artist.
