John Schlabach

John Schlabach joined the faculty of the Ohio University School of Music as Professor of Trumpet in 1998 and recently retired from full-time teaching. Prior to his appointment at Ohio University, he taught at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. He holds degrees from Northwestern University and Western Illinois University.

An active performer throughout his career, Schlabach has presented solo recitals at major universities across the Midwest and Southeast and has extensive orchestral experience as both a principal and section trumpet player. He currently serves as principal trumpet of the Ohio Valley Symphony and was first trumpet of OhioBrass, the faculty brass quintet in residence at the Ohio University School of Music. He has also performed frequently with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and West Virginia Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to his work as a performer and educator, Schlabach has contributed numerous educational articles to publications including the International Trumpet Guild Journal and The Instrumentalist. His article, “On Connecting the Ear and Brass Performance,” was published in the professional journals of all four major international brass associations representing trumpet, horn, trombone, and tuba/euphonium.

Schlabach has also been an active contributor to the International Trumpet Guild. He chaired the committee responsible for organizing the 2015 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Columbus, Ohio, and has performed and presented at numerous ITG Conferences.
