Session: Indonesian Trumpet School: the influence of language, culture and tradition in trumpet playing development
Indonesian trumpet player Eric Awuy started learning music at an early age under the guidance of his mother, whose origin is Quebec, Canada. At the age of 5, he started to play the recorder while his family was living in Germany. It didn’t take him long to be able to play the recorder proficiently and at the age of 13, he decided to start learning trumpet through a private teacher.
Later he decided at 15 years of age to pursue his dream to become a musician and was accepted in the class of Jean-Louis Chatel at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec in Hull and Montreal, Canada. He graduated from this conservatory in 1988 with highest honors, the Premier Prix de Conservatoire, in the field of trumpet and also Premier Prix de Conservatoire in chamber music.
Eric as a professional orchestral player in Montreal, Canada performed and free lanced with various orchestra as the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Charles Dutoit, National Arts Center Ottawa, Quebec Symphony Orchestra and the World Youth Orchestra, which took him around the world during the 1989-1991 season, performing in various cities around the world.
Eric participated and was finalist at the 1992 International Brass Quintet Competition in Narbonne, France with the Brass Five, a Brass quintet he founded with his friends during his academic years,
In the middle of 1994, Eric traveled back to Indonesia for a holiday which turned out to be his new permanent residence as he was attracted by the developing music scene.
Since then, Eric works as a professional musician in various orchestras in the country, currently playing principal trumpet with Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, Jakarta sinfonietta Orchestra, Jakarta Concert Orchestra and the Erwin Gutawa Orchestra,
Besides playing music, Eric is active in education and also the field of marching band as a adjudicator in various competitions in the country, hoping that one day these Indonesian marching band units can achieve an international performance level.
As an Yamaha Trumpet endorsee, Eric frequently tours around the country giving workshops and masterclasses in pursue to develop the trumpet and brass community in Indonesia.
