Cognitive Diversity In Trumpet Pedagogy: Teaching Students With Aphantasia

Dr. Dayvison Costa serves as Assistant Professor of Classical Trumpet at the University of Northern Colorado. His performance career spans orchestral, solo, chamber, jazz, Latin, and commercial music. 

Dr. Costa has performed with the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, Greeley Chorale, Greeley Chamber Orchestra, Loveland Symphony Orchestra, Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra, Arlington Symphony Orchestra, Garland Symphony Orchestra, and Fort Collins Wind Symphony. He has also appeared with ensembles including the McKinney Philharmonic, East Texas Symphony Orchestra, Meridian Symphony Orchestra, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of the University of São Paulo, Colorado All-State Jazz Orchestra, Funkiphino, the John Mills Big Band, the University of North Texas Jazz Lab Bands, and UNC’s Latin Beat Ensemble. 

As a soloist, Dr. Costa performed Erik Morales’ Concerto for Two Trumpets at the 2022 College Band Directors National Association Conference and gave the Brazilian premiere of Philip Sparke’s Gemini Concerto in 2022. 

Before joining UNC, Dr. Costa held graduate teaching appointments at the University of North Texas and the University of Southern Mississippi and served as trumpet instructor for the Marcus High School Marching Band. As a clinician and educator, he has presented masterclasses and clinics at universities, schools, and festivals throughout the United States and Brazil. He serves on the faculty of the University of Kentucky Summer Trumpet Institute and has appeared as a guest artist at events including the 2026 CSU Trumpet Day. 

Dr. Costa holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Texas, the Master of Music degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, and the Bachelor of Music degree from the University of São Paulo. Dr. Costa is a Bach Regional Artist and a Padovani Mouthpieces Performing Artist.
