Nathaniel Tighe, M.D., M.M. is a musician, educator and anesthesiologist.
As a musician, he enjoys the patchwork of the freelance life—performing as a teaching artist, orchestral and chamber musician. The focus of his early trumpet career was on contemporary classical music, earning him a Latin Grammy nomination in 2008. As a professional choral singer he has been a member of choirs at prominent institutions like Trinity Church, Boston and the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains in Cincinnati, OH. As a composer and arranger, he has written more than 75 works, including a library of transcriptions for his wife, trumpet soloist Ashley Hall-Tighe. A disc of his transcriptions for trumpet and piano from Maple Rise Music was released in September 2024.
As an anesthesiologist, he maintains research and educational interests in music and medicine, both separately and at their intersection. He has been involved in quality improvement and global health for many years. He is Co-Founder of the Periop SHOPPE program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, a perioperative optimization program that helps children and families negotiate anesthesia and surgery safely and easily.
He completed his musical training at the Eastman School of Music and Boston University College of Fine Arts, studying with James Thompson and Terry Everson respectively. He completed his medical training at Mayo Medical School, Wake Forest School of Medicine and Boston Children’s Hospital. Prior to his current post at Cincinnati Children’s, he was on the Anesthesiology faculty at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
