A pivotal figure shaping trumpet pedagogy and performance across Asia, Dr. Joseph Bowman has cultivated an influential career centered at Mahidol University College of Music in Bangkok, Thailand, where he has served as Professor of Trumpet since 2003. In this long-standing role, he guides students in applied trumpet, trumpet literature, pedagogy, and orchestral repertoire. His commitment to fostering international musical exchange is further demonstrated through his impactful tenure as Vice Dean for Global Partnerships since 2011, during which he spearheaded the development of the “Mahidol Music International Network” connecting over 80 institutions.

Dr. Bowman’s regional leadership extends to his role as the founding Executive Director for the Southeast Asian Directors of Music Association (SEADOM), an organization uniting over 70 member institutions. A landmark achievement underscoring his leadership was hosting the highly acclaimed 2005 International Trumpet Guild (ITG) Conference in Bangkok. Dr. Bowman’s distinguished performance career provides a rich foundation for his educational and leadership endeavors. He has been a member of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra since 2008, holding the position of Associate Principal Trumpet since 2021. His extensive orchestral experience also includes performances with the Memphis Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony, and numerous other regional orchestras in the US. As a soloist, he has graced stages with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra and presented solo recitals and empowering masterclasses across the United States, Asia, and Europe, including at institutions such as the Central Conservatory in Beijing, the National University of Singapore, and the Vietnam National Academy of Music, among many. He also performs with the faculty ensemble BrassArts Bangkok and his artistry is captured on recordings for Summit, D’Note, and Naxos American.

His deep engagement with the global trumpet community is evident through his prolific scholarly contributions, with over one hundred publications in outlets like the International Trumpet Guild Journal, The Instrumentalist, and the Mahidol Music Journal. Dr. Bowman served with distinction on the Board of Directors for the International Trumpet Guild (2009-2021) and as its youth web editor (2001-2008), and is also Vice President of the Thailand Trumpet Guild, consistently working to advance the art of trumpet playing. Dr. Bowman holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music from Arizona State University, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Cincinnati. His principal teachers include David Hickman, Samuel Pilafian, Alan Siebert, Marie Speziale, Vince DiMartino, and Pat Harbison.

Joseph Bowman is an endorsing artist for Bach trumpets. He resides in Bangkok with his wife, Lisa, and their son, Alex.
