Expand Your Ability Through Practice That Works

In the quest to improve our playing, we explore many paths. We change mouthpieces and instruments, we experiment with gadgets, we try this method and those exercises, and we ask the pros for tips, techniques, and lessons. While all these approaches have their place, we rarely learn what exactly makes practice work. In other words, what are the organizing principles of effective practice that one must consider to get the most out of practice time? DAVE WONDRA

Casta Diva

Matilda Lloyd explores the voice of the trumpet in this recital inspired by her debut album with orchestra. This recital takes it’s name from the CD, ‘Casta Diva’, releasing in April 2023, which demonstrates the full emotional range of the trumpet in 19th-Century Italian opera arias and virtuosic variations. Four works on the disc were originally composed with piano and feature in this programme: Rossini’s Prelude, Theme and Variations, which features the flugelhorn; and two songs by Pauline Viardot paired with J.B. Arban’s set of variations on one of her most famous roles: Bellini’s Norma. Other highlights of the programme include evocative antiphons by Hildegard von Bingen, and Glière’s Concerto for coloratura soprano.
